I was going to do a short post on how I  am getting round my ’sell out’ clause (see last post) by keeping up to date with MisssyM via her full post aggregation on the ABZblogs site. Hehe! I set the rules I’ll bend them where quality blogging is happening.

I couldn’t ignore the last post from fellow ABZ blogger Cllr Mark McDonald though. It’s late now and I wouldn’t do a response justice, although I will be posting comment in his blog soon enough. I just want to say that this blog may well be heading in a slightly local political direction (hey I already have 2 mentions in the Scottish round-up, I’m practically the politics authority! - also, what’s happening with curious hamster? after his move to wordpress his aggregation’s not feeding ABZ, this needs sorting, I digress…) Yeah, politics… I don’t think the P&J are doing the current round of political troubles in Aberdeen justice with their coverage. They’re becoming ever so slightly story writers rather than story tellers. Hopefully some fellow bloggers and I can re-direct the focus or at least get both sides heard.

I don’t talk about my own political leanings, mainly because I don’t like the set up of party politics, it’s always party first, politics second. Not how I want my life to be run thanks. So I’ll be staying independent although I’ll no doubt seem to be taking an SNP bias as I try to get the viewpoint of a non P&J/EE writer across.

School Estates

Last night was the beginning of the Informal Consultation period for Aberdeen City Council’s Estates strategy in respect to the proposed Bucksburn/Newhills merging and Stoneywood closure and re-zoning of children to the as-yet-undecided new school and Dyce school.

I felt it was a worthwhile evening. The attendees were split into about 6 smaller forums where ideas were taken on board by a scribe about the parent’s views on the proposals, all groups having the same questions. Myself and Catty were in a group of around 20 parents, predominately Stoneywood parents, however Stoneywood didn’t really have much to say. I took the lead trying to make sure the views of the Bucksburn Parent Council were heard.

The main points I made were:

  1. Location of School - We don’t really think there’s any chance of the school being placed on the existing Bucksburn School site. Mark McDonald is against that site as he said in his speech, published on his blog. It’s a brilliant site with country views and although it’s close to the main A96 road it’s not actually ON it however Mark seems to have a vendetta with the site claiming it’s the worst site possible for a school in Aberdeen. Access for pupils is off the Howes Road. However we pretty much reckon the only place is the existing Newhills site. This has issues for parents coming from Bucksburn village and Mugiemoss etc. but where else is there?? The Bankhead site is in the flight path and the farmland above Newhills is further away for everyone! Also in relation to the siting be it at either site we recommend an investment in the development of Howes Road. It’s already closed to traffic making it ideal for children to use for their extended(but still within the magic 2 miles) journey’s.
  2. Size of school and in particular size of classes. Bucksburn pupils benefit from their class sizes as they are already. The new school itself will open at full capacity I feel. There are proposed developments for Mugiemoss and others. which is bound to increase the roll. David Leng himself showed the future increases expected just from the developments that already have planning permission. Never mind the ’speculative’ developments from the Rowett land, BP building etc. If it opens full where is the flexibility to include these pupils. If Stoneywood does close, which nobody really expects to happen, there’s an additional intake there as well. Dyce haven’t even been consulted about Stoneywood’s possible rezoning to themselves!
  3. ASN Base and the inclusion of the special needs kids. This was also brought up by a special needs worker with regards to Newhills blindness provisions and their inclusion in a new school.
  4. Traffic problems this will cause in the area.
  5. Safety concerns of the extended travelling.
  6. What Aberdeen City Council see as preferential is at times very different from what parents see as preferential, especially in respect to class sizes. ACC want every class to be operating at the very highest limits of what current legislation allows and in fact are designing the new schools on these numbers. Never mind that the Scottish government want to reduce class sizes.

Lots of what I was saying was echoed by parents from Newhills. It seems the consensus is that both schools are embracing the opportunity of a state of the art school and all the benefits that will bring to the pupils. Both schools are concerned about siting and roll however. It seems that Newhills have been in on the back end of these proposals as well, many parents who attended the forum meeting called by Bucksburn last month were shocked to learn of these proposals and the feeling last night was that even that meeting was badly publicised at short notice.

This brings me neatly on to my main bugbear with Bucksburn.

The parents couldn’t care less.

I’m on the parent council at Bucksburn and the main difficulty we have in our role as spokespeople for the views of the parents of Bucksburn pupils is that we don’t actually know what those views are! Parental inclusion is a nightmare. We beg parents to be more involved and we don’t actually have a politically correct idea of why there isn’t more enthusiasm from them.

My personal view is that they don’t give a shit about their kids lives out of the house, that’s for someone else to deal with. You see the same faces every meeting. Every time there’s anything to be discussed. Where are the rest of them? It’s a sad state of affairs when those charged with the care of the children in our community are the very people who are the least interested in that job.

Come on Bucksburn, pull your socks up. The responses from Stoneywood school are fantastic. Newhills too had a bigger turnout last night than Bucksburn and it’s not anything to do with them having more parents, they have more parents who actually give a shit about their children.

One of the things brought up at our last meeting was that parents don’t know what goes on at the parent council. We are going to display the minutes in the display box at the infant doors in future and I’m also about to either redesign the main school website (probably moving it to a better host and using joomla/drupal or something, anything’s gotta be better than frontpage) or start a separate Bucksburn School Council blog/news thing which will also tell of what’s being discussed with the advantage of giving the opportunity for parents who were unable to attend(or don’t care about attending) the meetings, to have their views recorded in writing.

The Politics Show featuring Wendy Alexander

I don’t know why I watch the politics show, every time I see Wendy Alexander I feel like ripping out my ears and eyes. When are the Labour party in Scotland going to realise they lost the election because of their negativity towards the SNP? There’s no way that the Labour party in Scotland can continue on this path and expect a rise in popularity.

It’s even filtered down to local level here in Aberdeen. Recently I’ve been to a few meetings with the council in my position on the school council of my kids’ school over the budget cuts and estates strategy. We held a meeting a while back, attended by fellow ABZ blogger and local councillor Mark McDonald(SNP) and Labour councillor Barney Crockett. We were looking for answers which, however unpopular, Mark was trying to give. Barney just wanted to dwell on the failures of the council, pointing the finger of blame on the SNP, and score political points.

WE DON’T WANT THIS!!!!

As far as I am concerned Labour can piss right off until they lose the chip from their shoulders and focus on the issues. They insist on this campaign of negativity and I for one am tired of it. We’ve had it for over a year now.

CHANGE THE FUCKING RECORD!!!!

Bucksburn Open Invitation

You are hereby invited to the meeting tonight at 7PM in Bucksburn School. Anyone with an interest in the provision of education in the Bucksburn community should attend or have representation there. There will be MPs and local councillors present to answer questions and hopefully set minds at ease with regards to budget cuts, future (housing) developments, how education is to be funded in future.

If you have kids in any of the schools feeding Bankhead (esp. Bucksburn, Newhills and Stoneywood) you are well advised to attend.

Oh, and there’s coffee…

What’s so funny?

I am an advocate of free speech. True free speech that is, not the slightly left of centre free speech we often hear about. That’s one of the reasons I blog I think. To get down in published written form some of the things I would feel unable to say in public. (This is also the reason I bitch to ACC staff in email, that way it’s recorded.)

Anyway, I was thinking earlier about what issues should be allowed to be addressed by comedians. I remember Billy Connolly reportedly being bood at when he uttered his “I wish they’d just get on with it” line about Ken Bigley’s, at the time, threatened decapitation.

I probably would have winced at it myself. Does that mean it shouldn’t be said? No. I don’t believe so. The thing with free speech is that even when you have the right to say something, others have the right to be offended. Now here’s where I’m getting annoyed.

The recent knighthood of Salman Rushdie I thought was brilliant. I remember thinking at the time, oh aye, here we go… Well shit, they’re burning effigies of the Queen now! How dare they. Hyper sensitivity or what. So what if they(Islam) feel The Satanic Verses is blasphemous. I know there’s a crime nowadays in the UK for racial prejudices, stirring them up that is. However I believe our right of free speech is more important than that so here’s my tuppence..

Islam as a religion is bullshit. Not because of it’s teachings but because all religions are bullshit. Islamists(who I appreciate are extremists guising under the Islamic banner) are the top of the pop bullshitters. Can you imagine the furore in this, a Christian, country if someone was to write a book against Christianity! Of course you can’t because it’s not important. I read somewhere someone in Pakistan had called the knighthood of Sir Rushdie an act of provocation! HAaaaaahahahaha

Fucking Idiots. Here’s a picture of the prophet mohammed for our perusal(albeit with a cowboy hat shaped turban and particularly yellow+round face)…… Does that call for a burning of billythekid effigies? I’d say that line was more of an act of provocation that Knighting a man for services to literature.

Hold off that fatwa Ahmed…

Electo-riffic

well that was a bit gid eh! Guy I went to school with won one of the safest Lib-Dem seats(Roxburgh and Berwickshire) for the tories. Alex Salmond won Gordon (OK he was probably always going to, I mean who in their right mind would turn down the opportunity to have the possible first minister as your own MSP?).

The SNP won my own constituency of Abz North too. The ever annoying Nicola Sturgeon won Govan, which is great for the party, first Glaswegian SNP seat ever.

Annabel Goldie presented herself fantastically well through the evening/morning despite being unable to claim her own constituency in Renfrewshire.

I’m saddened that North Ayrshire can’t get over their Labour fixation, talk to anyone and they do nothing but complain about them, I think they all believe that a vote for anyone else is a wasted vote, they should have done what fitaloon did when he…

surprised myself by adding an extra vote on my council election slip by giving a 3 to the SNP candidate, it might just help ensure that Labour and the Lib Dems don’t get in.

Still, there’s no telling some folk. Highlight of the evening for myself…

I’m torn between the Arran boat breaking down with Cunninghame North’s papers on it and that Alex Salmond victory. I’m somehow squeezed in between him and Nicol Stephen in my constituency for power sharing, a fact I am sure should be of benefit to the region. I am actually in the Gordon constituency for Westminster elections as well, which sucks.

I suppose I should mention the farce that is the new voting electronics and possible fuck ups of the electorate. I almost spoilt my own council paper by putting an x instead of the 12345… only saving myself at the last second by rtfm-ing the paper. It was stupid imo to run both elections together while at the same time introducing the voters to a new, parallel system of voting. Maybe next time we’ll get it right. I’m sure this will have a negative effect on peoples perception of voting and the usefullness of voting. There will be people out there who know after all the hoo-haa that they unintentionally spoilt their ballot papers and will be put off by this. I hope it doesn’t show in the next turnout.

In the hard fought contest of the-kid.org the second vote went to the SNP with 4 votes(the 5th was me trying to turn the poll off!) over the Lib-Dems and Tories both having 3.

Now the wait for the list result…

Vote-tastic

I see the tories are putting up a fight in my election rigging poll, holding the Lib Dems to a 2 votes each tie for second place, with the SNP holding on to a single vote lead. Labour have yet to receive a single vote! I was fairly surprised by this with the leaning through the rest of the poll/area in general slightly to the left, bang where labour voters normally are! Still, rats and sinking ships eh…

Remember you CAN make a difference! lol

Here’s the story behind this if you’ve not been keeping up.

Stupid Bloody Spam Bots

Took the servers down and as such I’ve had to learn entirely too much SQL than one would deem necessary. Thank god for google caches though! I’m going to backup this thing lots and lots now… not that anyone would have noticed my absence eh…

The excellent Jyll has gotten me Hot Tamales from the United States. Coolness!! I’ll be texting you tomorrow mate to pick them up!

Ever noticed how when you can’t post for some reason you have lots to put up, then when it’s all good again you can’t remember a damn thing? I hate that. I know I have a bitch about the council to put on here but I can’t be arrised at the moment. Oh and I’m now on day 52 of the no front number plate experiment. NEP kindly informed me it’s a £30 on the spot fine (comments lost with the server meltdown) so doing the maths if I am stopped tomorrow and fined the experiment has cost less than 57p per day.

Checking my vote rigging post I see the Lib Dems are still in the lead over the SNP with 2 votes to 1. Get voting now!! I have it set to allow one vote per day I think so see how it goes. In my haste to get the poll working I neglected to actually put up both sets of candidates, so I’ll make it that whatever party wins the poll will receive both votes on the “second” paper(s)! Confused? I hope so! lol
